Government-funded study abroad awards

Government Scholarships, Explained Clearly.

Find out which government-funded scholarships exist for the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Ireland and New Zealand, what each one offers, and whether Indian students can apply.

!

Rounds, deadlines and eligibility change every year. The details below were checked in October 2026 and are a guide only. Always confirm on the scheme's official website before you rely on anything here. Government scholarships are free to apply for, so never pay anyone who promises to guarantee you one.

SCHEME FINDER

Government scholarships by destination.

Filter by country and level of study. Each card shows what the scheme offers, who it is for, whether Indian students can apply, and typical timing.

Not every destination has a government scholarship open to Indian students. In those cases, university scholarships are usually the main route. We help you compare both.

WHAT SELECTORS LOOK FOR

What makes an application stand out.

Each scheme has its own criteria, but these themes appear again and again.

1

Academic strength

A strong record in your previous studies, with the grades or class the scheme asks for.

2

Leadership and impact

Evidence that you have taken initiative at work, in your community or in your studies.

3

A clear plan

A specific reason for your course and country, and how you will use the degree afterwards.

4

A careful application

Well-written essays, strong references, and every document submitted correctly and on time.

HOW IT WORKS

Plan early, apply carefully.

Government scholarships follow their own timelines, which usually start well before your university applications.

START EARLY

The best applications are built over months, not weeks.

Strong essays, references and a clear plan take time. Begin a year or more before you plan to study.

1

Check eligibility

Confirm your nationality, level, experience and subject fit against the official criteria.

2

Build your profile

Gather achievements, choose referees and draft essays that show your goals and impact.

3

Apply to both

Most schemes need a separate university application. Plan both timelines together.

4

Keep a backup

Apply for university scholarships too, so your plan does not depend on one result.

BEYOND GOVERNMENT AWARDS

More ways to fund your degree.

Government schemes are competitive. Most students combine several sources of funding.

University scholarships

Awards offered directly by universities, often based on merit and available for many courses.

SCHOLARSHIP QUESTIONS

Common questions, answered directly.

What students ask us most about government scholarships.

Ask a counsellor →
Who pays for government scholarships?

They are funded by governments, sometimes together with partner organisations or universities. Examples include the UK Government's Chevening programme, the Government of Ireland's international scholarships and Germany's DAAD programmes.

Can any Indian student apply?

Not for every scheme. Eligibility is set by nationality, level of study and sometimes your field or work experience. Each card above shows whether a scheme is open to Indian applicants, but you should always confirm on the official website.

Do I have to return to India after studying?

Some schemes require it. For example, Chevening expects scholars to return to their home country for a period after the award, and some others have similar conditions. Check the terms of each scheme before applying.

Do I apply to the university and the scholarship separately?

Usually yes. Many schemes ask you to apply to the scholarship and the university on separate timelines, and some need a university offer before you can apply. We help you plan both together.

Why is there no government scholarship listed for some countries?

Some countries' main government schemes are limited to specific regions or levels, or do not currently cover India. In those cases, university scholarships are usually the best route, and we can help you find them.

Does your service charge to find or apply for scholarships?

Government scholarships themselves are free to apply for, and no one can guarantee you one. We offer guidance on eligibility, essays and planning as part of our counselling.
