HOUSING OPTIONS

Five common ways to live abroad.

Availability and names differ by country and city. This is a general overview.

University halls

Rooms managed by the university, often on or near campus.

Good for: easy start, meeting people. Check: application deadlines, as places can fill early.

Private student accommodation

Purpose-built buildings run by private providers.

Good for: convenience and facilities. Check: contract length and what is included.

Shared flats or houses

Renting a room with other tenants.

Good for: lower cost. Check: housemates, bills, deposit and contract terms.

Homestay

Living with a local host family.

Good for: a gentle start, meals and support. Check: house rules and distance to campus.

Private studio or apartment

Renting your own place.

BY DESTINATION

What to know, country by country.

General notes on student housing in each destination.

General notes only. Rules and availability vary by city and change over time, so we check the current position with you.

STAY SAFE

Avoid rental scams.

Fake listings and advance-payment scams target international students. Know the warning signs.

Red flags

Be careful if you see:

  • Prices far below similar listings
  • Pressure to pay quickly or "before someone else does"
  • Requests for payment by untraceable methods or outside the platform
  • A landlord who cannot show the property, even by live video
  • No written contract, or unclear terms

Safer habits

Before you pay anything:

  • Verify the landlord or provider independently
  • Ask for a live video tour or have someone visit
  • Read the full contract, including fees and notice periods
  • Check how the deposit is held and returned
  • Keep records of all messages and payments

HAVE QUESTIONS?

Let's clear things up.

What students commonly ask about housing abroad.

Still have questions? Talk to us →
When should I look for accommodation?

As early as possible, ideally once you have an offer. University housing often has early deadlines, and popular cities can be competitive.

Should I book before I arrive?

Many students book at least temporary accommodation first, then look for longer-term housing in person. This helps you view places safely before committing.

Is university housing guaranteed?

Not always. Policies vary by university, level and country. Check each university's housing page and deadlines, and ask us if you are unsure.

Can you book a place for me?

We guide your search and review options, but you make and sign the booking yourself. We do not own or manage properties.

How much will housing cost?

Costs vary widely by city and housing type. Our cost calculator gives an indicative budget, and we help you refine it for your city.
