OVERVIEW

Why study engineering abroad?

Engineering is one of the most consistently in-demand fields worldwide, with specializations that lead directly into industries such as construction, manufacturing, energy, automotive, aerospace and technology. Studying abroad gives you access to well-funded labs, industry placements and research groups that may not exist at home.

Entry generally rests on strong maths and physics results, and for roles that require professional registration, course accreditation matters as much as the university's name.

  • Strong global demand across almost every specialization
  • Clear path from bachelor's to master's to research degrees
  • Many countries offer post-study work rights for STEM graduates

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

What universities look for.

Requirements are set by each university and course. Treat these as typical starting points and check the programme page before you apply.

Academic

  • 12th-grade results with strong maths and physics marks
  • Chemistry is often required for chemical engineering
  • A foundation year if your marks or subjects fall short

Tests and English

  • IELTS typically 6.0 to 6.5 overall
  • SAT or ACT at some US universities, many are test-optional
  • Some universities interview applicants to competitive courses
Good to know

If you plan to work as a licensed engineer, check that the course is accredited by the relevant professional body in the country where you want to practise, since this can affect your registration later.

ENGINEERING QUESTIONS

Common questions, answered directly.

What students ask us most about engineering courses abroad.

Ask a counsellor →
Do I need to decide my specialization before I apply?

Usually yes at bachelor's level, since you apply directly to a specialization such as mechanical or civil engineering. Some countries offer a general first year before you choose, so check each university's structure.

Why does accreditation matter?

Accreditation from a professional engineering body can affect whether your degree is recognised for professional registration or chartered status in the country where you want to work. Always check this before you apply if practising rights matter to you.

Can I switch specialization at master's level?

Often yes, especially between closely related fields such as mechanical and aerospace, or electrical and computer engineering. Some switches need bridging modules or extra prerequisites.

Is work experience needed before a master's?

Most taught master's programmes do not require it, though some specialised or part-time programmes prefer applicants with relevant experience.

Are co-op or placement programmes worth choosing?

Many students find them valuable, since they combine study with paid, relevant work experience and can improve your job prospects after graduation. They often extend the total length of the degree.
